In cooperation with Cress B.V. and Steenfabriek Engels Oeffelt, Dutch research institute TCKI performed an independent study to assess the impact of Emisshield® high emissivity coatings on kiln energy performance. The goal: improve radiation efficiency, reduce fuel usage, and support the energy transition in the heavy clay sector.
The coatings, originally developed with NASA technology, were applied by Cress to the preheating and firing zones of a tunnel kiln. TCKI compared gas consumption, temperature distribution, and product quality before and after application.
The results were promising:
Firing temperature was lowered by 40°C while maintaining product quality.
15% reduction in net specific gas consumption in the kiln.
More uniform heat distribution, particularly in the outer product stacks.
Overall energy savings of ~3% annually, based on 20 years of trend data.
This case demonstrates how Emisshield® helps ceramic producers lower energy consumption, reduce CO₂ emissions, and stabilize product quality—without requiring structural changes to the kiln itself.
