Emisshield included in the European Commission’s INCITE platform

Emisshield® water-based high-emissivity coatings have been included in INCITE, the European Commission’s Innovation Centre for Industrial Transformation and Emissions.

INCITE, managed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, provides information on innovative industrial techniques that can contribute to the environmental transformation of energy-intensive industries. The platform focuses on technologies supporting objectives such as decarbonisation, energy efficiency, material efficiency and pollution prevention.

From radiant heat transfer to energy efficiency

Emisshield is a high-emissivity ceramic coating technology developed for high-temperature industrial applications. Applied to refractory and other furnace surfaces, the coating increases surface emissivity, allowing absorbed thermal energy to be more effectively re-radiated towards the cooler furnace load.

Improving radiant heat transfer can reduce the amount of energy required to achieve the desired process conditions. Depending on the application and operating conditions, this can contribute to lower energy consumption, improved temperature uniformity and reduced CO₂ emissions.

The INCITE platform lists Emisshield as an operational technology with an achieved Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 9. The technology is identified as relevant to several energy-intensive industries, including ceramics, glass, iron and steel, ferrous metals processing and non-ferrous metals.

A technology already applied in industry

The inclusion in INCITE builds on years of research and industrial implementation of Emisshield technology. High-emissivity coatings have been evaluated in research programmes including the EU-funded IMPROOF project and are currently applied in industrial furnaces and kilns across a range of high-temperature processes.
